Synthetic Dyes Pose Worldwide Threat to Food Chains
Synthetic dyes widely used in the textile, food, and pharmaceutical industries currently pose a significant threat to plant, animal, and human health, according to a recent research review. The problem mainly stems from the billions of tons of dye-containing wastewater that enters water systems each year.
Current global production of dyes is estimated to be 1 million tons annually. Though consumers are aware of artificial dyes in food, the biggest dye consumer is the textile industry, which uses about 80% of synthetic dyes and produces about 70 billion tons of wastewater yearly.
Accumulated research shows that dye wastewater blocks light from reaching microalgae and aquatic plants, disrupting the “bedrock” of the food chain. Dye chemicals can also accumulate in fish, the soil, and humans and are linked to allergies, asthma, and other toxic effects.
There is no simple solution to the problem, although the study authors recommend stricter regulations surrounding dye-containing wastewater – used for irrigation in some countries – and the development of non-toxic dyes, which greater consumer demand could help drive.
Reducing Sodium Can Lower Blood Pressure, May Be Comparable to Meds
Reducing salt intake by the equivalent of about 1 teaspoon per day can significantly lower blood pressure, a new study has found. The average decline in systolic blood pressure was 6 mm Hg, which is comparable to the effects of first-line medications for high blood pressure.
The study involved 213 participants aged 50-75. They were assigned to either a high-sodium or a low-sodium (500 mg per day) diet for one week before switching over to the opposite diet for one week. Blood pressure readings were taken before and after each diet ended.
Overall, about 72% of participants experienced lower blood pressure on the low-sodium diet as compared to their normal diet. Even those who were already taking blood pressure medication had a good chance of experiencing even better blood pressure numbers after reducing sodium.
The low-sodium diet cut sodium intake well below the current max daily intake recommendations, but: “Just as any physical activity is better than none for most people, any sodium reduction from the current usual diet is likely better than none for most people with regards to blood pressure,” said Deepak Gupta, MD. 10 Natural Ways to Boost Glutathione: The Master Antioxidant
Glutathione is sometimes called the “master antioxidant” because research has shown it plays many key roles in the body, including repairing cellular damage and enabling mitochondria to function correctly. Your body naturally produces glutathione, but you can boost its presence by consuming sulfur-rich foods, vitamin C, and selenium-rich foods. Milk thistle and turmeric have also shown potential for increasing glutathione, and both sleep and exercise aid glutathione production as well. (More)
Prenatal Vitamin D Could Lower Asthma Risk for Children
Vitamin D is an essential nutrient that plays a role in immune health, bone health, and much more. Everyone needs it – and deficiency is fairly common – but a recent research review indicates that it may be especially critical during pregnancy. Overall, supplementing with vitamin D while pregnant corresponded with lower rates of asthma and wheezing in children as compared to supplementing with a standard prenatal multivitamin. (More)
A Low-Fat Diet May Reduce Fatigue in Multiple Sclerosis Patients
Multiple sclerosis is a chronic disease of the nervous system with pain and fatigue being two of the most common symptoms. Previous research has shown that a plant-based, low-fat diet can help to significantly improve fatigue in multiple sclerosis patients. A new clinical trial tested the effectiveness of a low-fat diet where meat could still be included and found that it also reduced fatigue. Participants decreased their fat intake by about 11% on average. (More)
"Zoom Fatigue": Video Conferences Can Contribute to Mental Exhaustion
Whether for work or for school, daily interactions have become at least partly virtual for a good number of people. While technology certainly makes it easier to reach a large number of people at once, a recent study found that a 50-minute video conference-based lecture was significantly more fatiguing than a face-to-face lecture of the same length. This doesn’t mean video conferencing is detrimental to health, but it does appear to be better when kept short and to the point. (More)

Mitochondria function almost like tiny batteries, providing about 90% of the energy in your body’s cells. They are found throughout the body but are especially critical in organs with high-energy needs, like the heart, liver, muscles, and brain.
